Building African Resilience (BAR) is a non-governmental organization in Kenya working with communities affected by recurrent draught as a result of climate change particularly the pastoralist communities of Kajiado, Narok and Turkana and draught stricken counties or Makueni, Kitui and Machakos
The purpose of this organization is to facilitate effective response to the impact of climate change particularly the effects of recurrent draught on these communities in Kenya recognizing the place of women and girls and the special role they play as a result of effects of climate change and the need to deliberately alleviate this burden by empowering the entire community with knowledge and skills to respond effectively and to constructively participate in activities as well as facilitate knowledge sharing, learning collaboration and advocacy among members and global partners to amplify their voices and actions in shaping the mitigation, adaptation and resilience policies that are relevant to them.
Create awareness through targeted community communication, including a dedicated mobile phone platform for climate change communication. Dissemination of information in the form of early warning alerts, guided action to avert loss and communication on adaptive measures
Fundraising from donors, philanthropists and friends of the community to implement innovative mitigation and adaptation programs that help the communities cope with effects of climate change.
Incorporating school going children in climate change mitigation and adaptation activities as well as implementation of projects targeting sustainable food production for households
Knowledge building on climate change causes, ways of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, indicators global and traditional through various forms of media community forums, workshops, seminars and organized events
Championing for climate change justice for the community through damage and loss funds, adaptation funds and other funds as may be availed for climate change related activities
Undertake research and recommend appropriate solutions for target communities to increase their resilience
Increased coping mechanisms with local solutions for sustained livelihoods
Increased knowledge and preparedness to limit negative impacts
Capacity to absorb shocks with alternative fallback solutions, improved and resilient farming practices sustainably adopted by target communities
Benefits of mitigation activities including increased vegetation, improved rainfall cycle, wet lands for better vegetation realized and sustainable
Responsive climate change action where women and girls are empowered to adapt to climate change and participate fully in debates that affect them
